What caused the popularity of proteins?
According to the doctor, the popularity of proteins is due to more than one reason. More and more people are interested in a healthy lifestyle, exercise, and pay more attention to their well-being and nutrition. Moreover, proteins are important not only for muscle growth and recovery after physical exertion – they also provide a longer feeling of satiety, which can help control appetite or body weight more easily.
“Proteins are important for muscle growth and recovery after physical exertion, which is why they have become very popular. In addition, they provide a greater feeling of fullness than carbohydrates, so many choose products high in protein to more easily control appetite or body weight,” says V. Morozovas.

However, according to him, this trend is driven not only by science but also by social networks and marketing. “Social networks and wellness specialists actively encourage consuming more protein, so this topic has become very popular. Marketing also has a big influence – a prominently marked high protein content on packaging is often perceived as a sign of a healthier product,” explains the doctor.
With growing interest in proteins, the store assortment is also changing. Today, buyers can choose not only protein drinks but also mousses, cheeses, desserts, and other protein-enriched products.
When is it worth paying more attention to proteins?
Although interest in proteins is growing, the doctor reminds that most healthy people do not lack them if their diet is varied and balanced.
“A healthy adult needs about 1–1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. If eating a varied diet – including meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products – protein is usually sufficient. A higher need arises when limiting calorie intake, actively exercising, or aiming to build muscle mass,” says V. Morozovas.

The doctor also recommends paying more attention to protein intake for certain groups of people. “Seniors may lack protein due to decreased appetite, chronic diseases, or changed eating habits. Children and adolescents need it for their growing bodies, and those on diets should reduce calories without cutting protein. Therefore, it is worth monitoring not only what we eat but also what we give up,” notes the doctor.
Proteins are beneficial but do not work miracles
According to V. Morozovas, products high in protein can be a convenient solution for people who find it harder to get enough protein from regular food – for example, those who exercise actively, reduce calorie intake, or live a busy lifestyle.
However, the doctor urges not to forget to evaluate the product’s composition: “Products high in protein can be a convenient choice, but it is important to pay attention not only to the protein content but also to the product’s composition. If it contains a lot of added sugar, sweeteners, or other additives, the additional protein benefit may be significantly reduced.”
He also reminds that a higher protein amount alone does not mean a healthier diet. “Protein-enriched products are not a miracle solution. They also contain calories, so if you aim to lose weight, their amount is no less important than that of other products. To build muscle, protein alone is not enough – physical exercise is necessary, only then can the body use this building material,” emphasizes V. Morozovas.
According to the doctor, the most important thing is not to blindly follow trendy tendencies but to assess your individual needs: “If you doubt whether you get enough protein daily, protein-enriched products can be a convenient choice. However, they should complement a balanced diet, not replace it. The greatest benefit to health comes not from a single product but from the whole – a varied diet, physical activity, and daily habits,” concludes the healthy lifestyle partner of the retail chain, doctor Valerijus Morozovas.
