What is considered highly processed food

Germany’s health insurance fund AOK explains that highly processed foods usually go through several processing stages. In addition, they often contain many ingredients and additives.

Examples include meat products, instant soups, sugary soft drinks, chips, most ready meals such as frozen pizzas, as well as many baked goods and sweets. These products often contain many calories but few nutrients.

The importance of highly processed food consumption for health is also shown by a large 2024 review analysis. The study published in the British Medical Journal evaluated 45 meta-analyses covering nearly 10 million participants.

Scientists found links between high consumption of highly processed foods and 32 health outcomes, including cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders, and mental health problems.
