After learning about her brother’s health and the situation he found himself in, Gražina brought him home in February and started looking for help for him.

Visiting the farmers and seeing the conditions Algis lived in, Gražina could not believe it: “When I went inside – it was terrible. Worse than a barn. And the winter was cold. My brother was by the stove. Inside – just cement and that stove,” Gražina told Lrt.lt at the time.

She added that her brother was covered in wounds: “God, there wasn’t a single healthy spot on his legs – just abscesses, wounds. The left side – completely burned, the arm – as well. Algis wanted to light the stove, but he couldn’t stand anymore, so he fell onto the heated stove.”

Eventually, Algis managed to get a temporary residence permit in Lithuania – it was needed so that, without a Lithuanian personal document, Algis could receive healthcare services. However, the man’s health was so depleted that he died in July.

Gražina and her brother Algis were greatly helped by the non-governmental organization “Be with Me.” Its representative Almantė Karpienė told Lrt.lt that the initiation of a law enforcement investigation is a major achievement. However, A. Karpienė points out that law enforcement refused to start the investigation several times.
