As already reported, on Saturday a huge tragedy occurred near the Palanga bridge – a 17-year-old young man from Poland drowned in the Baltic Sea.

The General Rescue Center received a report about a person drowning near the Palanga bridge at 20:11. Initially, it was reported about a drowning man and three children, later clarified that they were minors and their father. Palanga rescuers received the information at 20:13.
Rescuers rushing to the scene transported one boy to the shore on a jet ski from the bridge pillars, the father with the girl reached the stones near the bridge on their own. Information obtained from the rescued boy indicated that his brother immediately submerged underwater and was not visible on the water surface. Palanga rescuers searched the entire accident area, but did not find the young man. Soon, firefighters, medical and police forces joined, divers were involved in the water search.

Rescuers said that immediately after the accident, vacationers on the beach themselves held hands and formed a human chain, trying to wade into the water and find the missing young man in the water.
This is exactly what was captured in a video that appeared on the platform “TikTok”. It shows people holding hands forming a human chain, trying to save the boy.

This video received thousands of reactions. “TikTok” users praised people for such an act:
- “It’s very nice to see people unite. Condolences to the parents.”
- “Respect to those who helped and took risks.”
- “Well done to those who tried to help.”
- “I cried… Respect to the rescuers, condolences to the close family and parents. Rest in peace, young man.”
The mayor of Palanga, Šarūnas Vaitkus, also thanked the people who helped.
“I want to sincerely thank the Palanga rescuers, firefighters, divers, and medics. They did everything that could be done at that time. They did not give up as long as there was hope.
I am also grateful to all those people who rushed to help the rescuers yesterday – holding hands they formed a human chain and tried to reach as far into the sea as possible. THANK YOU for your efforts. Thank you for not being indifferent to someone else’s misfortune. Thank you for understanding that in the face of tragedy, there are no strangers’ children,” Š. Vaitkus wrote on Facebook.









Žmonės.lt reminds that the young man’s body was found at 21:22, 57 meters from the drowning site, at about 3 meters depth, in a hole formed near the stones. The arriving medics confirmed his death.
