Last night in Palanga, a painful, very very painful tragedy occurred – the sea claimed the life of a 17-year-old young man who came to Palanga from Poland with his family.

Last night, at 20:13, the Palanga rescue service received a report that a person was drowning near the Sea Bridge,” the mayor wrote on Facebook.

According to him, as informed by the head of the Palanga rescue service, rescuers with jet skis were at the scene within a minute, but the young man was no longer visible on the water surface.

“The rescuers searched the entire incident area but failed to find the drowning person. They did not leave the drowning area until after an hour divers found and brought the young man’s body ashore. Unfortunately, after an hour, resuscitation efforts were no longer possible.

Now in the press, we see various versions of the incident: that the young man jumped off the bridge, that he slipped from the old bridge stones leading into the sea depth.

As it turns out, the family from Poland with three children decided to swim near the Sea Bridge last night after 8 p.m.,” said Š. Vaitkus.

According to him, very soon after everyone entered the sea, the children were caught by a strong current. The father himself pulled out the young girl. Rescuers brought ashore a boy about thirteen years old, whom the current carried towards the Sea Bridge and who managed to cling to the poles. The severely scratched child was already given a vest by the rescuers in the water and was brought to shore by jet ski.

“Unfortunately, the sea caught and pulled in the seventeen-year-old instantly. The boy who was just on the water surface disappeared in the water current after a few moments. Neither the Palanga rescuers nor the firefighters who arrived later were able to find him.

At this moment, the most important thing is not to speculate or create various versions of the incident. The most important thing is respect for the deceased young man and his family.

The entire Palanga community sincerely sympathizes with the young man’s family; we are shocked. It is especially painful to realize how quickly a beautiful family evening by the sea can turn into a tragedy. There are no words to ease the immense pain of losing a child.

Today everything else becomes unimportant compared to the pain of one family

“, the mayor wrote.

He thanked the Palanga rescuers, firefighters, divers, and medics, as well as “all those people who rushed to help the rescuers yesterday – holding hands, they formed a human chain and tried to reach as far into the sea as possible.”

“THANK YOU for your efforts. Thank you for not being indifferent to someone else’s misfortune. Thank you that in the face of disaster, there are no strangers’ children.

This tragedy painfully reminds us once again what our rescuers repeat every day: the sea is majestic, strong, and invincible. It cannot be underestimated for a moment.

Yesterday, Palanga rescuers pulled out minors from the water here and there all day and disciplined their parents. Nearly twenty minors were removed from the water yesterday, whom rescuers found swimming alone, without parental supervision, in water so deep it was above their heads. When the children were brought to their parents, the latter often scolded the rescuers and demanded not to disturb their rest.

Sometimes a few seconds are enough for a tragedy. Today in Palanga, we speak about it with great pain.

Let’s take care of each other. Especially children. And let’s not forget – the sea never warns twice,” the mayor wrote.
