Apple or pear: what to choose to avoid a sudden sugar spike

Dietitian Jamie Lee McIntyre emphasizes that eating a whole fruit is not the same as consuming the same amount of sugar in a product that contains almost no fiber.

“When eating a whole apple or pear, you also get fiber, water, and antioxidants. This is completely different from a product that contains the same amount of sugar but lacks these nutrients,” she explains.

What are the benefits of apples?

Apples are rich in pectin – soluble fiber that slows digestion and the entry of glucose into the bloodstream. Because of this, apples are classified as low glycemic index foods: they generally raise blood sugar levels gradually.

These fruits also contain polyphenols – plant compounds that may contribute to glucose metabolism. The main sugar in apples is fructose, which is absorbed more slowly than glucose.

The timing of when an apple is eaten may also matter. Some studies suggest that eating an apple before a high-carbohydrate meal can soften the subsequent glucose spike. However, one fruit does not negate the importance of the overall meal composition and portion size.

Pears have a slight advantage

A medium-sized pear contains about 27 g of carbohydrates and about 6 g of fiber – slightly more than an apple. Much of this fiber is concentrated in the skin and just beneath it, so peeling the fruit causes some loss of benefits.

Pears also contain a lot of water and soluble fiber, which help slow sugar absorption. Additionally, some of this fiber feeds the good bacteria in the gut. During fermentation, short-chain fatty acids are produced, which may contribute to regulating glucose metabolism. However, more human studies are needed to confirm this effect.

So which choice is better?

There is no clear winner in this comparison. Both fruits have a low glycemic index, contain soluble fiber, water, and antioxidants. Pears lead slightly in fiber content, but for most people, this difference is not significant enough to give up apples.

Dietitians remind that for blood sugar levels, it is often more important how you eat the fruit rather than which of these two fruits you choose.

It is recommended not to peel apples or pears if the skin is well washed and suitable for eating. Fruits can also be combined with a source of protein or healthy fats – natural yogurt, cottage cheese, nuts, boiled egg, or nut butter. Such combinations are digested more slowly, provide longer satiety, and may help avoid sharper glucose fluctuations.

Finally, specialists encourage not to try to pick a single “best” fruit. Rotating apples, pears, and other fruits provides a wider variety of nutrients and plant compounds.
