She was assigned to work as a primary school teacher at Dituva school, received 2 hectares of land. Alanta’s husband Vytautas also worked at the school. The young family began building a house. The interviewee recalled that the first years of independence were very difficult: salaries were low, everything was lacking.
The Zapalskiai couple built a house together after work at the school and farmed. They dug up one hectare of land with a spade and planted cabbage by hand.

“My mother became a widow young with her brothers. Their guardians fermented cabbage and sold it. Later, my mother did the same,” said Alanta, named after a resonant name.
