As written on the Meteliai Regional Park’s Facebook page, during the monitoring of state-protected natural heritage objects, it was found that a tree approximately 100 years old is in very poor condition – this year it no longer showed any signs of life.

This spruce was exceptional not only because of its history. Its height reached as much as 45.6 meters, and the trunk circumference was 2.22 meters. Growing in the Balkasodis botanical reserve, the tree was for many years one of the most prominent natural landmarks of the area.
It is believed that the giant may have been killed by the bark beetle typographer – one of the most dangerous pests of Lithuanian spruce forests. This small beetle can cause huge damage to trees, especially those weakened or affected by other adverse factors.
Although the Norūnai forest spruce is no longer alive, its status remains unchanged – the tree continues to be a state-protected natural heritage object.
