Summer – another project? Psychologist warns: the desire to do everything leads to burnout

In my practice, I often see that people come to rest with the same demands they place on work: it must be meaningful, productive, and maximally utilized. However, for the nervous system to recover, it often needs not more experiences, but fewer demands on oneself.

Contributing to this is FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) – the fear of missing something. It is a feeling when it seems that others are currently experiencing something valuable, while we remain on the sidelines.

FOMO is not just the desire not to miss an event or trip. Often, beneath it lies a deeper need to belong, to be included, and to feel that one’s life is sufficiently meaningful. Seeing moments of other people’s vacations on social networks can make us feel that we are resting “not well enough” or not making the most of the summer as we should.

Although summer activities are usually enjoyable, they still require energy. Travel, socializing, new experiences, and constantly changing plans are additional stimuli that the body must adapt to.

When rest time is filled with constant activity, the nervous system may lack opportunities to shift into a recovery state.

What is worth remembering?

Choose, don’t accumulate. Instead of asking “How can I manage everything?” ask yourself: “What is truly important to me this summer?”

Check your motive. Ask yourself: “If no one found out about this activity on social networks, would I still want to do it?”

Leave free time. Planned emptiness is not lost time – it is an important part of rest.

Observe how you feel. Fatigue, irritability, or difficulty concentrating are not signs of laziness. They can be signals that the body needs more recovery.

True rest is not a time filled with as many experiences as possible. Sometimes the greatest summer gift to yourself is a day when you don’t have to rush anywhere and after which you don’t need to rest from rest.
