“Before going to nature, it often seems that you need to buy as many different products as possible. However, a large shopping basket does not necessarily mean a better picnic. A few quality products are enough – for example, several types of cheese, seasonal fruits, fresh bread or crackers, and water. From them, you can easily create various snacks, and preparing for a weekend trip is simple and affordable,” says D. Čenkienė.

According to her, before leaving, it is worth assessing how many people will be served and how much food will actually be needed. This makes it easier to plan purchases, spend less, and avoid food waste.

“When planning a snack basket, I suggest following a simple five-product principle – choose one main product, complement it with seasonal fruits, favorite jam, bread or crackers, and don’t forget water. Such a basket allows you to quickly prepare various snacks, and the remaining products are easy to use at home,” notes the specialist.

Five products enough for a delicious picnic

One of the most versatile summer snack choices is different types of cheese. Fermented cheese pairs perfectly with fresh vegetables and crackers, mozzarella – with tomatoes and basil, and aged hard cheese – with nuts, honey, or jam. Just a few different types of cheese allow you to create a varied snack table, and the leftover cheese at home can later be used for pasta, casseroles, or stews.

To save money, it is also worth choosing seasonal fruits. Watermelon is one of the most practical choices for a larger group, as one fruit is usually enough for several people. Melons, cherries, nectarines, and other seasonal fruits and berries also go well with various types of cheese and help create a colorful snack table. If you don’t eat some of the fruits in nature, you can easily use them for breakfast, desserts, or smoothies.

It is also worth putting your favorite bread or crackers in the basket. They don’t take up much space, stay crunchy longer, and allow you to quickly prepare various snacks – place a slice of fermented cheese and a cherry on a cracker, or mozzarella, tomato, and basil on bread.

For a summer cheese snack board you will need:

  • 125 g mozzarella;
  • 150–200 g fermented or aged hard cheese;
  • ½ watermelon;
  • 2 nectarines;
  • a handful of cherries or grapes;
  • 2–3 short cucumbers;
  • a handful of cherry tomatoes;
  • favorite bread or crackers;
  • 2–3 tablespoons of favorite jam or honey.

Let’s prepare. On a large wooden board or tray, arrange different types of cheese – tear the mozzarella by hand, and cut the fermented or aged cheese into slices or cubes. Next to it, place larger pieces of watermelon, nectarine slices, cherries or grapes, cucumber slices, and cherry tomatoes. Complement the snack board with crunchy crackers or slices of fresh bread, and serve jam or honey in a separate dish so everyone can create their favorite flavor combinations. Such a snack board requires little preparation, is easily adaptable to different numbers of people, and leftover products are easy to use when you return home.
