A 20-month-old girl drowned in the river, and after rescuers pulled all the people from the water, the whereabouts of one passenger remained unknown. The police reported that the little girl’s body was recovered and taken to the Holos District Hospital morgue for forensic examination.

Officials believe the missing girl is 16 or 17 years old. She has still not been found. Although crossings over the Tana River are frequent, hippopotamus attacks are common in this area. This happened just a few days after chilling footage was recorded showing a hippopotamus attacking a boat full of tourists.

A widely circulated video captured a terrifying moment when a huge beast in Botswana suddenly started chasing a fleeing boat, forcing it to escape at high speed. The person filming the frightening event said: “For a few moments, everyone on the boat was genuinely worried.” Another described the moment as “one of the scariest moments I have ever experienced.”

In Africa, hippopotamuses kill about 500 people annually. This makes them one of the deadliest land mammals in the world and more dangerous to humans than lions and elephants.
