On Tuesday, a routine trip across the Tana River unexpectedly ended in tragedy: after an attack near the Mikinduni village, 16 people were urgently rescued from the water. According to the police, the canoe capsized after a hippopotamus attacked the people paddling it, reports “The Sun.”

A 20-month-old girl drowned in the river, and after rescuers pulled all the people from the water, the whereabouts of one passenger remained unknown. The police reported that the little girl’s body was recovered and taken to the Holos District Hospital morgue for forensic examination.
Officials believe the missing girl is 16 or 17 years old. She has still not been found. Although crossings over the Tana River are frequent, hippopotamus attacks are common in this area. This happened just a few days after chilling footage was recorded showing a hippopotamus attacking a boat full of tourists.
