Popeye Village in Malta is Popeye Village, also called “Sweethaven Village.” It is one of Malta’s most famous tourist attractions, established on the original 1980 film set of the movie “Popeye.”
In this film, the legendary American character – the strongman Popeye – was portrayed by the bright-minded Robin Williams.

The village located in Anchor Bay, near the town of Mellieħa in northwest Malta, is visible from afar: colorful wooden houses where the famous film was shot are set on a rocky coast, offering stunning panoramic views of the surroundings.
This unique place was established in 1979 when the film crew visiting Malta was captivated by the picturesque location. A whole fictional fishing village was built for the film. The wood for the wooden houses was brought from the Netherlands and Canada.
Although it was thought that the site would be dismantled after filming, it was eventually decided to leave everything and turn it into a tourist entertainment oasis. The decision was excellent – Popeye Village still attracts many tourists from all over the world.
This place is especially loved by families, who find various entertainments in the village – from screenings in an old American cinema to swimming or boating on the turquoise bay beach.

What can you do there?
It is worth spending the whole day at “Popeye Village,” especially since there is no shortage of entertainment. Ticket prices depend on the season. Children under 3 years enter free, discounts apply to children aged 3-12 and seniors. The average ticket price is 20 euros. This price includes:

Although the village is for everyone, it is especially enjoyed by those who grew up with Popeye and other characters from his stories: Popeye’s beloved Olive Oyl, the villain Bluto, the town mayor, the postman, and others.
Characters portrayed by professional animators invite everyone to watch theatrical performances, participate in tours and games.

Who is Popeye?
Popeye is one of the most famous 20th-century American animated and comic characters, recognizable by his squinting eye, pipe in his mouth, love of eating spinach, and unusually strong arms. This sailor was created by American cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar. Popeye first appeared in 1929 in the comic series “Thimble Theatre.” Initially, he was just a side character, but readers liked his character and humor so much that he soon became the main hero of the entire story.

It is believed that Popeye’s appearance and behavior were inspired by a real person – Frank “Rocky” Fiegel from Illinois. He was known for his strong character, love of fighting, pipe smoking, and having problems with one eye. E.C. Segar knew him from childhood and later used him as inspiration for his character.

Popeye gained huge popularity through animated cartoons, which began to be created in 1933. The hero became known worldwide for his extraordinary strength, which he gained after eating canned spinach. At that time, Popeye even contributed to the popularity of spinach in the USA, as he was presented as a symbol of healthy eating and strength for children.
Over time, Popeye became a global cultural symbol, remaining popular for decades. Series, toys, computer games, and films were created.
One of the most famous is the already mentioned 1980 film “Popeye,” starring the famous Hollywood actor R. Williams, who was just starting his career then.
