The idea sounds appealing: less chemistry, fewer products, more naturalness. However, experts warn – this method is not suitable for everyone and can be more challenging in everyday life than it appears on social media.
What is the “No Poo” method?
“No Poo” means giving up traditional shampoos, especially those containing strong cleansing agents – surfactants, which remove oils and dirt but can also dry out or irritate the scalp.
Instead of shampoo, natural products are used, for example:
rye flour,
apple cider vinegar,
just water or very gentle products.
The goal is to allow the scalp to “reset” and reduce overly active oil production. Over time, hair is said to become stronger, shinier, and less oily.
But reality is not always that simple
During the transition period, which can last from a few weeks to a month and a half, hair often becomes even oilier. Therefore, many people face the problem: work, sports, meetings, or social life do not always allow walking around with obviously greasy hair.
Moreover, the method is not suitable for every hair type:
fine hair tends to look tangled and dirty faster,
sensitive scalp may react differently,
for some people, oil production never regulates itself.
How to prepare for the “No Poo” experiment?
Hairdressers advise to see it as an experiment, not a strict rule.
Helpful will be:
a clearly defined trial period,
a transition phase plan,
accessories (headbands, scarves, buns) to help hide greasier roots.
Regular brushing is also important – it is worth distributing natural scalp oils along the entire hair length. Some choose natural bristle brushes, which help act like a natural hair mask.
Another popular remedy is the so-called acid rinse procedure: a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar, which can add more shine.
Risky choice for dyed hair
Experts warn that “No Poo” is often not the best solution for dyed or bleached hair.
Such hair usually requires extra care, and completely giving up special products can cause it to:
become dry,
lose shine,
fade color faster.
Especially if a lot of time and money is invested in hair color, a radical abandonment can disappoint with the result.
“Low Poo” – a compromise between naturalness and comfort
For those who want less “chemistry” but do not want to give up shampoo completely, the “Low Poo” method is offered.
It means using gentler shampoos – often without:
sulfates,
silicones,
strongly drying agents.
Such products cleanse more gently but allow maintaining a feeling of cleanliness without a long adjustment period.
The essence – not fashion, but what suits you
Hairdressers emphasize that there is no one universal solution. For some, “No Poo” works perfectly, for others – gentler “Low Poo,” and for others, regular shampoo works best.
The most important thing is to consider your hair type, scalp, and lifestyle, rather than blindly following trends.
