Mistake that will cost you dearly: never put these items in checked luggage

Passengers of „Jet2“, „Ryanair“ and TUI are reminded not to leave not only expensive or essential items in checked baggage. Due to the fire risk posed by lithium batteries, some devices are not allowed in the aircraft’s baggage compartment at all, writes „The Mirror“.

Prescription medicines

Although less than 1% of checked baggage goes missing, sometimes it takes several days to receive a misdirected suitcase. Therefore, it is recommended to carry regularly used prescription medicines in hand luggage.

This reduces the risk of missing an important dose of medicine if the checked suitcase is delayed or delivered to the wrong airport.

If medicines are lost during the trip, it is advised to contact a local pharmacy. Pharmacists can advise on what to do and, in some cases, help obtain urgently needed medicines.

External batteries and electronic devices

Due to the risk of fire, external batteries and electronic cigarettes with lithium batteries cannot be carried in checked baggage. They must be taken into the aircraft cabin.

Airlines may also limit the number of electronic devices a passenger can carry. „Jet2“ and „Ryanair“ allow up to 15 personal electronic devices per passenger.

„Ryanair“ also allows carrying up to 20 lithium batteries or external batteries in hand luggage, each with a capacity not exceeding 100 Wh. It is always worth checking the specific airline’s rules again before traveling.

Jewelry and other valuables

It is better not to leave jewelry, cash, and expensive electronics in checked luggage. Items can be damaged during baggage transport, and in rare cases, thefts occur.

Travel insurance usually compensates for the value of lost baggage, but insurance payouts often have limits and deductibles. Therefore, the compensation received may not be enough to replace expensive items.

It is advised to keep expensive items in a small hand bag that can be kept close throughout the trip.

Swimsuit

A swimsuit is not prohibited in checked baggage, but when going on a leisure trip, it is practical to put it in hand luggage.

If the checked suitcase is delayed, at least you can go to the beach or pool while the rest of the items reach the hotel.

A swimsuit will also come in handy if you arrive at the hotel earlier than the check-in time. Instead of waiting at the reception, you can change and start your vacation immediately.

Phone charger and adapter

Upon arrival in another country, a phone may be needed for navigation, hotel reservations, electronic tickets, or to contact relatives. Therefore, it is worth keeping the charger and the necessary power outlet adapter in hand luggage.

This is especially important if the checked suitcase is delayed. A passenger without a charger may not only be unable to use the phone but also lose access to important travel documents.

Before closing the suitcase, it is worth checking whether all items that may be needed in the first hours of the trip are in hand luggage: medicines, documents, valuables, electronic chargers, and at least one set of clothes.
