According to two sources cited by “Politico”, the incident was considered serious enough for the UK embassy in Washington to raise the issue at the White House.
It is not known when the messages were exchanged or what their content was.
A. Burnham took over as Prime Minister from former Labour Party leader Keir Starmer on July 20.
“We do not comment on national security matters,” said a spokesperson for A. Burnham’s office at Downing Street, not denying that such an exchange of messages took place.

A. Burnham is not the first known British politician to fall victim to this type of deception.
In 2024, the UK government released a video recording of a phone call showing then-Foreign Secretary David Cameron being deceived by a person impersonating former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.
The Foreign Office explained at the time that the incident was publicized to prevent any attempts by the perpetrators to manipulate the recording.
