Lithuanian cinema treasures return to screens: free screenings in 48 locations across the country

The Lithuanian Film Centre consistently takes care of preserving the heritage of Lithuanian cinema: digitizing, restoring, and adapting films for modern screens, as well as ensuring their distribution in Lithuania and abroad.

The collection already includes more than 50 restored feature, animated, and documentary films, and this year it was supplemented by Vytautas Žalakevičius’s tragicomedy “Sorry” (1982), Almantas Grikevičius’s melodrama “His Wife’s Confession” (1983), and Artūras Pozdniakov’s musical film “Something Happened” (1986).

Restoration allows the film to be seen as close as possible to its original version – the image, colors, and sound are restored, and details faded over time are brought back. The presentation of the restored work also provides an opportunity to rediscover its significance, view the film through today’s eyes, and meet its creators, film critics, and historians who can tell about the circumstances of the film’s creation.

V. Žalakevičius’s film “Sorry” playfully balances between reality and allegory. A famous composer and singer suffering from a creative crisis returns to his hometown, where his seriously ill mother, father, childhood friends, and new acquaintances await him. As the hero tries to restore relationships with his loved ones, the town’s life unfolds full of secrets, love stories, and unexpected intrigues.

The film stars Aleksandras Kaidanovskis, Kostas Smoriginas, Nijolė Oželytė, Eugenija Šulgaitė, Vaclovas Blėdis, Regimantas Adomaitis, Jelena Solovej, and Donatas Banionis. The film’s composer and song performer is Vytautas Kernagis.

A. Grikevičius’s “His Wife’s Confession” is a drama about a woman’s inner experiences, unfulfilled dreams, and longing for love. Irena works outside her specialty, and her once romantic relationship with her husband, surgeon Jonas, has faded. Hope to start life anew is awakened by feelings for a promising scientist, Richard, for whom she is ready to leave her family, but this love also brings disappointment.

For this film, as for many other works by A. Grikevičius, the screenplay was written by director V. Žalakevičius. The main roles were played by Rūta Staliliūnaitė, Juozas Budraitis, and Leonidas Filatovas, with Nelė Savičenko and K. Smoriginas also acting.

The third film restored this year by order of the Lithuanian Film Centre is A. Pozdniakov’s “Something Happened,” which brings together three very popular Lithuanian music names of the time: Vytautas Kernagis with the group “Artelė,” “Foje,” and “Antis.” Created 40 years ago, at the dawn of the Rebirth, their music videos capture not only the brightest musical phenomena of the time but also the mood of societal changes already maturing. Thus, the film becomes an authentic testimony of its era.
