The General Emergency Centre was immediately informed about the find. Deminers from the Lithuanian Armed Forces Juozas Vitkauskas Engineering Battalion arrived at the scene and safely removed the shell for destruction.

“Before starting construction of important energy facilities, we conduct thorough territory surveys and preventive preparation. Such work allows us to identify potential risks in advance and ensure a safer environment for future construction works and workers, as well as avoid delays during construction due to found explosives,” says Vaidotas Stankevičius, acting head of the Synchronization Program Implementation Center.
Inspection of the future Gižai substation area for wartime explosives is part of the preparations for the „Harmony Link“ project construction. About 100 kilograms of various metal objects have been found and removed in recent days alone. Further reconnaissance will continue along the entire power transmission line up to the border with Poland.
„Harmony Link“ is a strategically important electricity connection project between Lithuania and Poland, which will strengthen the integration of the Baltic States and continental Europe’s electricity systems and improve the reliability of the electricity transmission system.
