A unique study published in the journal “PLOS Medicine” reveals: the decisive impact on health may be how often we take breaks and how sedentary time is distributed throughout the day.

The results are staggering: each additional hour of uninterrupted sitting significantly increased the risk of cancer and mortality from it among the study participants.
“Our collected data show that sitting for more than 30 minutes without any break is closely associated with the threat of oncological diseases,” says the senior author of the study, epidemiologist Frederick Ho from the University of Glasgow.
“The good news is that even the simplest short walking break can help manage this threat,” says the scientist.
In conducting this study, researchers analyzed data from more than 91,000 individuals collected during the “UK Biobank” project. This is a long-term study aimed at monitoring the health of about half a million UK residents.
The average age of the study participants was 56 years, and none of them had previously had cancer.

Participants’ physical activity was monitored for seven days using wrist motion sensors that recorded everything from complete inactivity to intense exertion. Their health status was then monitored for another 12 years.
The results are unequivocal: overall sedentary behavior directly correlates with poorer health, higher risk of oncological diseases, and mortality. This pattern remained even after accounting for factors such as age, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, education, or diet.

However, after a more detailed analysis of sedentary habits, researchers noticed a crucial difference: not every minute spent sitting harms health equally.

Researchers distinguished two types of passive time: uninterrupted sedentary time (when sitting for 30 minutes or more without a break) and interrupted sedentary time (when sitting lasts less than half an hour or is frequently interrupted by at least minimal movement).
Data show that these two types of passive rest affect the body radically differently. The decisive factor is the total time: each additional hour of sitting increasingly raises the likelihood of oncological diseases.

The opposite effect was recorded among those who constantly interrupted their sitting. Each hour of such fragmented sedentary time was associated with an 18% lower risk of death from cancer and a 6% lower overall morbidity.
Moreover, among those who moved, cases of obesity-related cancer decreased by 9%, and those related to type 2 diabetes by 10%.
“The findings show that the impact of sedentary behavior depends not only on its total duration but also on whether sitting is continuous or broken up by activity breaks,” the researchers say.
Biologically, this pattern is justified: experiments have confirmed that even short movement breaks improve metabolism compared to uninterrupted sitting.
“Current health guidelines emphasize moderate or vigorous exercise, but our study shows that light movement should not be underestimated,” says F. Ho.
