„Eurobarometer“: nearly half of European SMEs struggle to find employees with the right skills

A new Eurobarometer survey shows that 46% of European SMEs face difficulties finding employees with the right skills. Hiring non-EU citizens remains limited. Over the past two years, one in seven SMEs tried to hire employees from outside the EU. Of those that hired non-EU citizens (14%), 54% indicated that the hiring process is complicated.

The most frequently mentioned obstacle is the complexity of administrative and immigration procedures (31%), as well as difficulty finding suitable candidates (25%) and overcoming language barriers (24%).

According to the survey data, most companies (85-90%) directly manage the hiring of employees from non-EU countries. SMEs are poorly informed about public support for international hiring. The use of private recruitment agencies for international hiring is significantly higher.

Business representatives believe that hiring employees from outside the EU could be improved by providing financial support (31%), information and advice (25%), help finding candidates (23%), assistance with workplace integration (20%), and immigration and relocation support (18%).
