Previously, due to peat extraction and intensive drainage in the damaged area, the State Forest Enterprise plans to dam the internal drainage ditches of the peatland, install soil barriers and protective embankments, carry out special forest cuttings, and remove trees and shrubs uncharacteristic of the bog. The protective channel surrounding the peatland will be maintained and managed to prevent excess water from entering adjacent areas.

The restored raised bog would become more resilient to the effects of climate change, more effectively accumulate carbon, retain water, reduce the risk of peatland fires, and create favorable conditions for the recovery of valuable wetland habitats and biodiversity.
The next stage – after completing the mentioned works, the Mažeikiai district municipality will implement the project “Adaptation of the Didzlaukis raised bog located on the common regional route ‘Natural Landscapes’ for visitation in the Mažeikiai district municipality” – existing and new pedestrian paths, bridges will be renovated and installed, as well as rest and observation infrastructure, small architectural elements, educational tools, and other infrastructure necessary for visitation.

The project is planned to be completed by autumn 2029.
