One of the most common situations is an egg taken out of the box with a cracked shell. Sometimes a small crack is noticed only after returning from the store, other times the egg cracks at home – when the package is placed carelessly, dropped from hands, or bumped into another egg.

If nothing leaks through the crack, it may seem that throwing away such an egg would be unnecessary food waste. However, the shell is not just a hard “package” of the egg. It performs an important protective function and helps protect the inside of the egg from microorganisms in the environment. When this natural barrier is damaged, bacteria may find a way into the egg’s interior.
But does this mean that every cracked egg must be immediately thrown into the trash? According to specialists, this is not necessary in all cases. It is important when and under what circumstances the shell cracked, how the egg was stored, and whether its contents have started to leak.
