“Gut health describes how well the digestive system performs many of its functions: digesting food and absorbing nutrients, moving food through the intestines, maintaining a protective gut barrier, and a properly functioning community of gut microorganisms,” explains registered dietitian Johannah Katz.

According to her, when the gut is healthy, a person usually feels that digestion runs smoothly, and bowel movements are fairly regular. Frequent pain, severe bloating, constipation, or diarrhea should not be a problem.

“There is no one ‘perfect’ gut microbiome because the microbiome of healthy people can vary greatly,” says J. Katz.
