Water with lemon, turmeric, and cold shower: doctor – about popular tips on the internet

Water with lemon, turmeric, and cold shower: doctor – about popular tips on the internet

Some wellness tips can have a positive effect, but their results are often much more modest than promised. Other methods may be completely unnecessary, unsuitable for a specific person, and in some cases even dangerous to health. So how to distinguish a useful recommendation from a loudly presented health myth?

The most popular tips are commented on in the press release by Milda Kaminskienė, a family doctor at the Altamedica clinic network, according to the press release.

Can turmeric supplements reduce blood glucose levels?

Turmeric is often presented on social networks as a natural remedy to reduce blood glucose levels and the body’s sensitivity to insulin. The curcumin contained in it does indeed have biologically active properties, but currently there is not enough scientific evidence to claim that turmeric supplements are a reliable means of treating or preventing diabetes.

It is important to distinguish a small amount of turmeric used as a spice in food from concentrated dietary supplements. Consuming turmeric in usual dietary amounts is not dangerous to health, but taking turmeric supplements in large doses carries a risk of liver damage. This risk increases if the supplements contain substances that improve curcumin absorption, such as piperine – black pepper extract.

Turmeric supplements can also cause nausea, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, constipation, or worsen reflux symptoms.

The family doctor points out that the natural origin of a product does not always mean it is safe. Therefore, it is recommended to consult a doctor before starting to take turmeric dietary supplements.

Does a glass of warm water with lemon in the morning speed up metabolism?

A glass of water in the morning can be a beneficial habit as it helps replenish the body’s fluid reserves after the night. However, as the family doctor explains, there is no basis to claim that warm water with lemon significantly speeds up metabolism. The greatest benefit in this case comes from the water itself, not the special properties of lemon. Moreover, water with lemon can also have negative effects.

The effect of citric acid can gradually weaken tooth enamel and increase tooth sensitivity. For people suffering from heartburn, citrus fruits can also irritate the esophagus and stomach, intensify reflux and other unpleasant symptoms.

Can a spoonful of apple cider vinegar before meals help reduce body weight?

Some studies show that vinegar may have a positive effect on glucose indicators and body weight, especially in individuals who are overweight or have type 2 diabetes. Acetic acid can slow gastric emptying and carbohydrate absorption, so the feeling of fullness after a meal may last longer, and blood glucose levels may not rise as sharply.

However, it is important not to forget that vinegar can also cause adverse effects: irritate the esophagus and stomach, worsen reflux symptoms, and damage tooth enamel. In addition, family doctor Milda Kaminskienė adds that one product cannot solve complex health problems.

To reduce body weight or control blood sugar levels, a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and, if necessary, doctor-prescribed treatment are more important.

Does a cold shower every day strengthen immunity?

Although cold water can help wake you up more easily, provide alertness, and increase vigilance, it is not scientifically proven that it actually strengthens immunity.

Moreover, sudden cold can even be dangerous, especially for people with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. It can cause sudden vasoconstriction, increase heart rate, and raise blood pressure. In such cases, it is advisable to consult a doctor before starting to regularly take cold showers. The family doctor also adds that a cold shower is not a necessary condition for good health and certainly does not replace other health-promoting factors.

Health tips on social networks are often presented very simply: one product can speed up metabolism, another strengthen immunity, and yet another control blood glucose levels. However, a person’s well-being is influenced by many interconnected factors, so there are no universal solutions suitable for everyone.

Family doctor M. Kaminskienė encourages critically evaluating tips that promise quick results. If you have been feeling fatigued for a long time, have disturbed sleep, changes in body weight, digestive problems, or other recurring symptoms, it is worth looking for their cause together with a family doctor rather than relying on popular remedies on social networks.
