The concept itself says a lot: it is associated with the Latin word gratus, meaning “pleasant” or “kind-hearted.” People who regularly practice gratitude tend to view challenges more optimistically. Instead of focusing on what is lacking, they appreciate more what they have.
The London School of Economics describes gratitude as a kind of “social glue”: it strengthens the sense of belonging, encourages prosocial behavior, and helps maintain cooperation and resilience even in times of uncertainty.
Gratitude can change signal pathways in the brain
Neuroscience has already revealed much about the biological basis of gratitude. When we feel genuine gratitude, according to the “American Brain Foundation,” a whole chain reaction begins in the brain.
Dopamine and serotonin are released. Gratitude stimulates the hypothalamus, which promotes serotonin production and sends a signal for dopamine release in the brainstem. Dopamine enhances the feeling of satisfaction and motivates repeating gratitude. This creates a positive, self-sustaining cycle.

In the morning: “What good am I going to do today?” This helps focus on opportunities rather than problems.
In the afternoon: “What am I grateful for right now?” This question helps return to the present, especially in moments of stress.
In the evening: “What am I grateful for today, despite the challenges?” This way, even difficult days can be turned into growth opportunities.
The “American Brain Foundation” also suggests other ways to incorporate gratitude into daily life.
You can keep a gratitude journal—regularly and specifically writing down what you are grateful for, and later occasionally reading previous entries.

“Our study provides the first empirical evidence on this topic and suggests that experiencing gratitude may extend the lifespan of older adults,” said lead author Ying Chen.
