Since 2020, Kaunas Municipality has been allocating 2 million euros annually to the public institution “Žalgiris Basketball Center”. This year, the funding was decided to be increased, taking into account the impressive sporting achievements.
“Kaunas has long been called the sports center of Lithuania. Kaunas “Žalgiris” contributes greatly to this. The club has become part of the identity of both the city and all of Lithuania. Its history is written not only by titles, but also by loyalty to traditions and character. It gives Kaunas an exceptional sense of pride and makes its name famous all over the world,” said Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis.
Last season, Žalgiris won the King Mindaugas Cup, defended the Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL) champions title, and achieved a high – fifth – place in the EuroLeague.
“The contribution of Kaunas City Municipality to the development of the “Žalgiris” club has always been very significant. The city and its club are inseparable from each other, so we are grateful for the strong support and increased assistance. This cooperation allows us to pursue the highest goals not only on the basketball court, but also to expand the scope of “Žalgiris” activities and professionalism as an organization, thus creating value for the entire city of Kaunas.
