Already after leaving the store, reviewing the purchase receipt, it turned out that the amount of one item – a backpack costing almost 70 euros – was not recorded on it.
“We all looked at each other. The decision was very simple – we have to go back and pay,” Eglė recounts.
Upon returning to the store, the employees initially thought that the customers had come to complain. However, upon hearing that the family had returned not because of an error in their favor, but to pay for it, they were speechless for a moment.
“Well, you are honest,” the surprised saleswomen uttered. For such an act, they gave the children sweets.
Eglė doesn’t hide it – for a moment, the thought flashed that they were just lucky, that maybe they wouldn’t have to go back to the store to pay. But it quickly disappeared.
“I realized that the backpack I would see on my child’s shoulders every day would remind me not of luck, but of the fact that we kept something that didn’t belong to us,” she says.

Now everything is different. The backpack reminds the family not of a mistake, but of the choice to be honest even when no one forces them.
And for the children, this incident will remain not just as a day when they received sweets. It will be a memory of a small but very important life lesson – that true value lies not in saved money, but in a clear conscience and the example set by parents.
“Since the child for whom we bought this backpack is exceptionally honest and a rule-follower, we didn’t even have the slightest discussion. The decision to return to the store to pay for the backpack was made instantly. When the saleswomen gave the children a bag of sweets afterward, they felt like winners. And now everyone tells this cheerful story,” Eglė told the portal 15min.
