Genius lies in simplicity
“Previously, people more often looked for recipe ideas in cooking shows or magazines, but now for many, the source of inspiration is social networks. We notice that when one or another ingredient becomes popular, interest grows not only in the product itself but also in its alternatives or additives used in recipes,” says G. Kitovė, a representative of the retail chain.
Accessibility is precisely one of the main reasons why bananas so easily became a new internet sensation. Unlike exotic or expensive ingredients, bananas can be found in practically every home, so trying a recipe seen on social networks takes just a few minutes.
Bananas naturally provide creaminess and sweetness, so they can replace some syrups or sugar. Moreover, their taste pairs perfectly with the most popular drinks today – coffee, cocoa, matcha, or plant-based milks. According to chef Jolita Tamoševičienė, this versatility is what determines the popularity of bananas in the kitchen.
Not only tasty but also sustainable
These drinks not only tempt with flavor but also offer the opportunity to use overripe bananas. It is precisely the very ripe fruits, covered with brown spots, that are best suited for such recipes – they accumulate more natural sugars, making them sweeter, softer, and more aromatic.
“You should not rush to throw away well-ripened bananas. On the contrary – such fruits are best suited for smoothies, coffee, or banana milk. They provide natural sweetness, so the amount of added sugar can be reduced. This is also a great way to reduce food waste because even softer, less visually appealing bananas reveal their full flavor in drinks,” says chef Jolita.
According to her, if you see that the bananas at home are ripening quickly, it is worth cutting them and freezing them. Later, they will be useful for preparing various drinks – giving them a pleasant, almost ice cream-like consistency and helping to avoid food waste.
