“The ceasefire regime cannot be unilateral or asymmetric, because otherwise it would endanger the lives and health of our soldiers. Therefore, defensive operation tasks are currently being carried out in full.”
A representative of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense emphasized that “the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to carry out the defense tasks assigned to them according to plan.”
According to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, before the visit of US President Donald Trump’s special envoys, the Ukrainian authorities tried to introduce temporary ceasefires on the front. Defense units were ordered to observe the “silence regime” on the front line from 00:00 on September 5 to 23:59 on September 8.

Analysts recall that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on September 4 that Donald Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will arrive in Ukraine on September 6 after their visit to Russia. Russian media also confirmed the upcoming US delegation visits to Russia and Ukraine.
At the same time, sources reported that S. Witkoff and J. Kushner expressed concerns about their safety during the trip to Ukraine.
ISW emphasizes that Ukraine halted long-range strikes on the Moscow region while CIA Director John Ratcliffe visited Moscow on August 26. At the same time, V. Putin showed no indication that Russia intended to stop strikes on Ukraine during S. Witkoff and J. Kushner’s visit.
“Putin’s obvious unwillingness to guarantee the safety of the US delegation in Ukraine shows the Kremlin’s reluctance to recognize the United States as mediators in peace talks and highlights his efforts to force the US to negotiate only with Russia,” ISW believes.

US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he is sending his envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv with a plan to end the more than four-year war in Ukraine.
This move is the latest Washington attempt to break the diplomatic deadlock in the bloodiest European conflict since World War II, which began in 2022 when Russia launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
A senior Ukrainian official told AFP that the envoys are expected in Kyiv on Sunday.
US publication “Axios” reported that on Saturday in Moscow they will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and on Sunday in Kyiv with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Kremlin declined to comment.
Trump told reporters that both negotiators will seek to assess whether progress toward peace is possible.
Peace efforts have stalled due to Washington’s war with Iran, while Moscow and Kyiv have intensified long-range attacks, causing civilian casualties to rise to levels not seen since the war began.
“I sent Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, two great negotiators. They did a great job, and we sent them to see if we can achieve something. And there is a good chance we will,” Trump said.
“They are bringing a proposal to end the war,” he said.
The US president did not say whether the plan envisages Ukraine giving up part of its territory, as he hinted earlier, but added: “We have an idea for peace.”
This will be the first time Trump’s businessman friend S. Witkoff and son-in-law J. Kushner visit war-torn Kyiv since Trump returned to power last year promising to resolve the conflict.
S. Witkoff and J. Kushner, who participated in ceasefire talks in Gaza and Iran, have visited Moscow multiple times during previous diplomatic efforts.
Exhausting war
A new push for diplomacy is being attempted while Russia and Ukraine shell each other with long-range missiles and drones.
Just hours before Trump’s announcement, a Russian drone struck the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) headquarters in central Kyiv, Zelensky reported.
The strike, which Zelensky said targeted the office of the acting head of the service, was the first attack on this headquarters since the invasion began.
Despite the unprecedented strike, the Ukrainian president proposed a ceasefire with Russia during the US envoys’ visit.
“There will be no air strikes from our side, and Russia must also ensure a ceasefire – without any of its own air strikes – for as long as these talks take place,” he said in his evening address.
Russia has not yet commented on this proposal.
Hours later, Oleksandr Hanža, head of the Dnipro regional military administration, reported that four people were killed and five injured in a Russian strike in Kamianske in southeastern Ukraine.
Zelensky said on Wednesday that Russian airspace will be “completely unsafe” and full of Ukrainian drones as long as Moscow continues its war.
The trip of S. Witkoff and J. Kushner is being prepared more than a week after a rare visit by CIA Director John Ratcliffe to Moscow, during which he warned Russia to refrain from any attacks against NATO members, US media reported.
Earlier this week, the US hosted Russia’s finance minister at the G20 meeting in North Carolina.
