Yemeni Houthis launched a lightning offensive this month and captured vast territories in one of the poorest countries in the world, prompting the internationally recognized Yemeni government, supported by Saudi Arabia, to urgently respond.
Saudi Arabia itself, one of the powerful states in the region, has carried out numerous airstrikes in Houthi-controlled territories but has failed to stop their advance. Riyadh also requested help from its ally Washington, but it was not provided.
Saudi Arabian officials in the capital announced the first air raid alert on Saturday since fighting resumed in neighboring Yemen.
Residents of Riyadh heard explosions on Saturday morning, and major problems were reported at the airport.
