VRM – before the obligation for "Regitra" to warn drivers about the expiration of the technical inspection validity

Such an initiative is being considered by the Seimas, which has requested the Government’s opinion. Parliamentarians will rely on it when making the final vote on the amendments.

The amendments to the Road Traffic Safety Law prepared by V. Fiodorovas propose that five working days before the expiration of the mandatory technical inspection, the vehicle operator be informed by SMS or email to “Regitra”.

This is necessary because, as the author of the amendments points out, there are cases when drivers forget to carry out the technical inspection on time.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior emphasizes that “Regitra” does not conduct technical inspections, does not set their procedures, does not manage technical inspection data, and otherwise does not participate in the process.

According to the ministry, technical inspection service providers and the Lithuanian Technical Inspection Companies Association already provide a reminder service about the expiration of the technical inspection. It can be ordered free of charge online or after the technical inspection is performed.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, “Regitra” does not have contact details of all vehicle owners or operators necessary to warn about the expiring technical inspection.

“Using partial or incorrect data would pose a risk of disclosing sensitive data to third parties and violating personal data protection requirements,” the ministry’s opinion states.

A similar proposal was already considered by parliamentarians several years ago, but due to the Seimas elections, it remained shelved. At that time, the Government’s opinion was also negative.
