“Nine months after the ceasefire was announced, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are still not safe anywhere,” UN human rights office spokesman Thameenas al Kheetan told reporters in Geneva.

He condemned the fact that “the Israeli army has intensified attacks in the Gaza Strip in recent days, killing and injuring dozens of Palestinians.”

The ceasefire agreed last October between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas remains in effect, but it has not stopped the violence in the Gaza Strip, and efforts to reach a long-term agreement to end the war have stalled.

From July 13 to 20, “at least 57 Palestinians, including six children and eight women,” were killed in Israeli attacks, Th. al Kheetan said.

The Israeli army announced in recent days that it had carried out a series of strikes in the Gaza Strip targeting several members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad who, it said, participated in the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel or later held hostages.

The army also reported striking a weapons depot, a weapons manufacturing site, and a rocket launch position, claiming that this infrastructure posed a threat to its soldiers.

Th. al Kheetan said the strikes targeted residential buildings, at least one tent sheltering internally displaced persons, and other crowded areas. According to him, 34 victims “died far from Israel’s designated yellow line.”

“The killing of civilians in these attacks raises concerns about ongoing violations of international humanitarian law, war crimes, and other potential atrocities in the Gaza Strip,” he said, emphasizing: “Under international law, the deliberate targeting of civilians is a war crime.”
