During a ministers’ meeting on the topic “The resurgence of political terrorism,” M. Rubio stated that “far-left terrorism” has become a “blind spot” as after the September 11, 2001 attacks, all attention was focused on jihadist extremism.

“Even today, the very idea that far-left terrorism could be a serious threat is regarded as right-wing nonsense or, worse, as a dangerous fascist conspiracy,” he said.

Pointing to the increase in left-wing attacks in Europe and the US since 2016, M. Rubio called for strengthening cooperation in fighting the ideology he described as “toxic resentment cloaked in the language of equality and justice.”

M. Rubio, a staunch anti-communist whose parents fled Cuba, said that left-wing extremism is inspired by “hatred of civilization itself.”
