Sarakiniko Beach is truly special – it resembles an otherworldly lunar landscape more than a typical sandy or rocky Mediterranean coast. This beach on the beautiful Greek island of Milos features an impressive appearance: it is made up of dazzling white volcanic rocks naturally shaped by the Aegean Sea and northern winds.
The unique rock formations are smooth and curved, many serving as diving platforms for visitors wanting to jump or dive into the crystal-clear turquoise water surrounding the volcanic area. Cliff jumping and diving are the main activities at Sarakiniko Beach, and many also swim in natural caves and snorkel in the blue water. Visitors can also relax on the smooth white surface and often say it resembles space.
One vacationer shared on TripAdvisor: “You have to visit to swim, jump from higher or lower cliffs into the sea, or just enjoy the sun. Great place, looks like the moon.”
Another commented: “Impressive, completely different place, I have never seen anything like it. Amazing. It’s like a lunar landscape, but with white stones.”
“It felt like we were on another planet. Such a beautiful and unique beach,” noted a third visitor. And a fourth added: “Very beautiful beach with extremely clear water. Because of the white rocks, it stands out from all other beaches – definitely worth a visit.”
Although this place is famous for its stunning views, visitors are warned to be cautious of sea anemones on the underwater rocks – touching them can cause a painful skin reaction.
Still, this does not deter people from swimming in the clear water or enjoying the views of this beautiful Greek coastline that resembles a lunar surface.
Sarakiniko Beach is conveniently located just a 10-minute drive from the main port town of Adamas. It is also easily accessible from the town of Plaka (a 10-minute trip) and the charming fishing village of Pollonia (only 15 minutes away).
The best way to reach the island of Milos is to fly to Athens, then take a short 45-minute flight from the Greek capital to Milos. It is also possible to take a ferry from Athens to Milos; the fastest trip takes about an hour and a half, but due to weather conditions, it can be much longer, so flying may be the best option.
