“Considering today’s negotiations, I have decided to entrust the leader of the Social Democratic Party, Magdalena Andersson, to try to form a government,” said the Speaker of Parliament Andreas Norlen to journalists.

Earlier on Friday, Sweden’s election winner M. Andersson announced she was ready to try to form a government.

“I want to lead Sweden with a new spirit of cooperation and (…) my goal is to seek broad cooperation,” she said.

59-year-old M. Andersson, who served as Sweden’s Prime Minister in 2021–2022 and was the first woman in this position, will likely try to form a government with three other left-wing parties, although due to significant ideological differences, she faces a challenging task.

After the general elections held on Sunday, the four left-wing parties have a three-seat majority in the 349-seat parliament over the right-wing alliance of outgoing Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, which also includes the anti-immigration “Sweden Democrats.”
