On Tuesday, officers of the VSAT Pagėgiai Border Unit Šiauliai Border Guard, conducting prevention and control of illegal secondary migration through Lithuania, stopped a car “Volkswagen Sharan” coming from Latvia for inspection on the Riga–Šiauliai highway near Kalviai village (Joniškis district).

The minivan with Latvian state registration plates was driven by a 47-year-old Latvian citizen. He presented a Latvian identity card and a Polish-issued driver’s license valid until March 2040 to the border guards. It was this document that raised doubts about its authenticity among the VSAT officers.
After a preliminary investigation, it was found that the driver’s license was not made according to the production requirements of such document blanks, which suggests that this document is a complete forgery.
When asked by the border guards where he got the driver’s license, the man said that he passed the driving exams in Poland.

VSAT officers detained the Latvian, and he was placed in the Šiauliai detention center.
A pre-trial investigation was launched at the VSAT Pagėgiai Border Unit for forgery or possession of such a document, led by a prosecutor from the Šiauliai District Prosecutor’s Office of the Šiauliai Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
Such a criminal offense is punishable by a fine, restriction of liberty, arrest, or imprisonment for up to four years under the law.
