“Lithuania has lost a distinguished luminary of humanitarian culture – an authoritative literary researcher whose conceptual works and deep insights shaped our understanding of 20th-century and contemporary Lithuanian prose, fostering respect and responsibility for the native word,” the head of state said in his condolence message.

According to G. Nausėda, during a decisive time of transformation, leading the Lithuanian Writers’ Union and actively participating in public life, P. Bražėnas made a significant contribution to Lithuania’s path to freedom.
“The bright memory of the Professor will remain alive not only in the generations of Lithuanian language specialists, educators, and cultural creators he nurtured, but also in the memory of our entire society,” the president said.
As reported by the Lithuanian Writers’ Union, P. Bražėnas passed away at the age of 85.
He was born in 1941 in Mažeikiai, Molėtai district. After graduating in Lithuanian studies from Vilnius University in 1965, he taught and later defended his doctoral dissertation in the humanities.

An important phase of P. Bražėnas’s career was connected with the writers’ community – from 1976 to 1990 he served as secretary of the board of the Lithuanian Writers’ Union, and from 1985 to 1990 as the first secretary of the board. From 1990 to 2013, he taught at Vilnius Pedagogical University, was dean of the Faculty of Lithuanian Studies, and professor of the Department of Lithuanian Literature.
P. Bražėnas established himself as one of the most authoritative researchers of Lithuanian prose, publishing books such as “At the Decade’s Border,” “Man and Word in Prose,” the monograph “The Work of Juozas Aputis,” and the study “Contemporaries and Peers.”
For his contributions to Lithuanian culture and literary science, P. Bražėnas was awarded the Medal of the Order of the Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania in 2021.
