The swimmer who showed the biggest breakthrough was named Tomas Navikonis by “SwimSwam”.
The Lithuanian national team athlete, according to one of the most popular swimming media portals, was not considered one of the favorites in either the 100 or 200 m freestyle events before the championship.
Nevertheless, Navikonis eventually reached the finals of two individual events and won his first international medal – silver in the 200 m freestyle.
“This is a phenomenal performance,” noted “SwimSwam”.
Alongside T. Navikonis, Jack Kelly, Miroslav Knedla, Zalan Sarkany, Nikita Sheremetas, and Hugo Gonzalezas also contended for this nomination.
At the “SwimSwam” awards, the breakthrough country was named the Lithuanian national team.
In the relay competitions, our swimmers reached two finals.
The men’s 4×200 m freestyle relay team took fifth place, and “SwimSwam” noted that the Lithuanians swam this event in 7 min 3.53 sec – half a second faster than two years ago when they won the European Championship gold (many swimming stars did not compete in that championship before the Olympic Games).
The Lithuanian team took fourth place in the mixed 4×200 m freestyle relay.

It is noted that even without T. Navikonis there were solid swims – Danas Rapšys, Aleksas Savickas, Andrius Šidlauskas impressed the “SwimSwam” reviewer, and European youth vice-champion Tajus Juška swam fast in the relay, where Lithuanians are seen as contenders to reach the final at the World Championship next year.
As is known, Lithuania won two medals in individual competitions – alongside T. Navikonis’s silver, Rūta Meilutytė added gold on the last day of the competition, triumphing in the 50 m breaststroke event.
The best young swimmer of this championship was named British athlete Amalie Smith, who was the only one in her age group of girls to win a medal in an individual event (silver in the 400 m individual medley), and among the contenders was mentioned Ieva Jurkūnaitė.
The 16-year-old Lithuanian improved the Lithuanian record in the 200 m freestyle event by almost two seconds and finished fifth in the final.
Additionally, she was very fast in the mixed 4×200 m relay final, swimming her leg in 1 min 56.40 sec.
