The goalkeeper, who played as many as 120 matches for the Danish national team, represented Glasgow Celtic this season, but has not played since February, and his contract with the Scottish club ends this summer.
“I believe now is the right time,” K. Schmeichel said to TV2 about ending his career.
He suffered a shoulder injury last March when the Danes played Portugal in the Nations League quarterfinals, but he could not replace the injured goalkeeper because all substitutions had been used.
After 11 months, the injury recurred. “I did not realize how bad it was back in March. It was a long process,” he said. “I consulted various surgeons about my shoulder, and they said I should not hope to return to elite football.”

The son of legendary Danish goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel created his own legend, starting his career at Manchester City, then representing Leicester City for 10 years, with whom he won the English league in 2016. Before ending up in Glasgow, he also played for Nice and Anderlecht.
K. Schmeichel defended the Danish national team’s goal in two World Cups in 2018 and 2022, and reached the semifinals with Denmark at the 2020 European Championship.
“I think everyone dreams of saying goodbye to football on the pitch, but you don’t always get what you want,” the goalkeeper said. “I have experienced so much along the way, so football owes me nothing. I have had so many opportunities, so many experiences.
What is most valuable are the friendships and contacts I have made. The moments I shared with them – both good and bad.”
