According to them, there are still about 2,500 Russian soldiers on the Kinburn Spit. Drone strikes and remote mining of the territory have limited the supply of ammunition, fuel, and food, and most of the Russian forces have withdrawn further east, beyond the village of Heroiske.
The commander of the Ukrainian soldiers, known by the call sign “Java,” said that previously Russian logistics operated from the Zaliznyi port towards Heroiske until supplies were moved deeper into the peninsula.
“Through intercepted communications, they scream that they cannot organize logistics, that they do not want to go there because it means death,” said commander “Java.” – The spit has become a trap for them.”
Ukrainian soldiers stated that previously Russian forces directly used artillery, self-propelled howitzers, and other equipment from the Kinburn Spit, but systematic strikes destroyed most of those capabilities.
According to “Java,” now Russian forces can only reach the coastal areas of Ukraine’s Mykolaiv region using longer-range artillery deployed in the occupied part of Kherson region.
Ukrainian military units have also remotely mined roads used by Russians for troop rotation and supply operations, targeting cars, motorcycles, and ATVs transporting personnel and equipment.
However, as Ukrainian defenders admitted, the operation is complicated by the threat of harming civilians. As Krym.Realii writes, Russian soldiers sometimes dress in civilian clothes and operate from residential buildings, so Ukrainian forces must carefully confirm targets before striking.
The Kinburn Spit stretches between the Black Sea and the Dnipro-Bug estuaries, directly opposite the Ukrainian-controlled city of Ochakiv. Russian forces occupied this territory in 2022, so it is close to Ukraine’s Mykolaiv region and the Odesa–Mykolaiv transport corridor.
In November 2025, Ukrainian Navy press representative Dmytro Pletentshuk stated that the protected coastal ecosystem was “practically destroyed” due to military actions, fires, pollution, and the construction of military infrastructure.
