42 and 34-year-old tourists from Germany were staying at a hotel in Arenal, the resort of Playa de Palma. Emergency services were called on Saturday, August 29, just before midnight. The incident is reported by the “Majorca Daily Bulletin”.

The women’s relatives tried to contact them for some time. The phones rang, but the tourists did not answer, so worried relatives turned to the hotel staff. They called emergency services.
The first to arrive at the scene were Palma police officers, followed by paramedics, firefighters, and national police officers.
Both women were found unconscious in the room. Medics resuscitated them on site and later transported them in serious condition to Son Llàtzer hospital.
One of the victims later required treatment in the barochamber at the private Juaneda clinic. There, the patient breathes oxygen at higher pressure – such treatment can be applied in cases of severe carbon monoxide poisoning.

Possible gas source – hotel kitchen
A 39-year-old hotel employee was less affected. He was also taken to the hospital.
After firefighters checked the room and other hotel premises, suspicion arose that carbon monoxide could have leaked from the kitchen. A pipe connected to a device in the kitchen runs through the room where the tourists were staying.
The exact cause of the gas leak has not yet been determined. The incident is being investigated by the Spanish national police.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas, so a person usually does not realize they are breathing it. Poisoning can cause headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness, and drowsiness, and at high gas concentrations – loss of consciousness.
