“The drone that crashed in Galați on Thursday evening is a Russian-made ‘Geran-2’,” Romanian President Nicușor Dan announced on the social network X on Sunday.

“This is the unequivocal conclusion of a technical report prepared by Romanian state experts,” he added.

On Friday, after the drone hit an apartment building in Galați, near the border with Ukraine, a 14-year-old boy and a 53-year-old woman were hospitalized.

This was the first drone strike on a residential building outside Ukraine since the start of the large-scale war in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the Romanian leader for, in the words of the Ukrainian, his clarity following the Bucharest announcement.

“Facts are the best remedy against (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s lies and they prove that Russian manipulations will not succeed,” V. Zelensky said on social media.

“Ukraine is ready to cooperate closely to counter common threats and strengthen the protection of lives – not only in our country but also in friendly Romania and the rest of Europe,” he added.

The Russian embassy in Romania accused Ukraine of staging a provocation, while President V. Putin stated on Friday that no one can authoritatively determine the origin of the aircraft until a thorough investigation is conducted.

In his Sunday post, accompanied by four photos allegedly showing the device, Romanian President N. Dan said a detailed technical analysis was carried out, showing that Russia is the “sole responsible party.”

“The Cyrillic inscription ‘GERAN-2’ was found on the debris, and the analyzed electronic components, navigation systems, control modules, engine, and structural elements show similarities – even identical features – with other ‘Geran-2’ drones previously found on Romanian territory,” he said.

“Physical and chemical analysis confirmed the presence of the same materials and fuel types that have been repeatedly identified in devices of this series,” the head of state added.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, dozens of drones have strayed into Romania, but until now no residential buildings have been affected.

The drone entered Romanian airspace while Russia was carrying out strikes on Ukraine, the Romanian Ministry of Defense reported.
