The incident occurred at the Ritom hydroelectric power plant, located in the village of Pjotos, shortly after 9:30 a.m. local time (10:30 a.m. Lithuanian time), the Italian-speaking Ticino canton police noted in a statement and added that rescue services were informed about a “fire inside the building.”
“Based on preliminary incident reconstruction data, for reasons not yet determined (…) an explosion occurred, injuring two employees,” the statement said.
“Both later died from severe injuries sustained,” the police reported.
According to police data, one of the deceased is a 55-year-old Swiss citizen, and the identity of his deceased colleague has not yet been officially established.
The police statement also indicated that the building suffered “significant damage,” and the exact circumstances and causes of the accident are currently under investigation.
