The storm that raged last Thursday evening caused the most damage to the southern part of Lithuania, especially in the territories of Varėna and Druskininkai municipalities – local politicians claimed they had not seen such a disaster in 15 years.

Services counted hundreds of fallen trees on the roads, most of which were removed within a day.
Foresters and the State Forest Enterprise are still assessing the losses, but for now, the fallen or broken trees in the forests remain untouched – in some places, legal regulations also prohibit doing so.
This includes the most affected areas – the territories of the villages Puvočiai, Kasčiūnai, Kašetai.
The issue was mentioned on Tuesday by parliamentarian Angelė Jakavonytė.

“When we protect the forest, let us not forget to protect people as well (…). Right by the road stand broken, dangerously hanging trees – like pencils. A stronger gust of wind is enough, and such a tree can fall directly onto the road, a car, or, God forbid, a person,” wrote the parliamentarian on Facebook, sharing photos of broken and “hanging” trees.
“But what worries me the most is that, as far as I understand, these dangerous trees may remain here for a long time because this forest massif is designated as the natural habitat ‘Western Taiga,’” she added.
