LTPF doubts whether the dismissed Vilnius prison employees had romantic relationships

“From the reports provided by the Lithuanian Prison Service, it gives the impression that those women were allegedly granted clemency to leave seemingly without any consequences from the service or from work. Such explanations sound very strange and unconvincing, especially after the accusations of romantic and intimate relationships,” said LTPF chairwoman Loreta Soščekienė during a press conference in Vilnius on Thursday.

“If such data exists, the Lithuanian Prison Service had every opportunity to conduct investigations and suspend both employees and officers from work during the investigation period, and then make decisions and apply certain measures. This was not done now,” she noted.

“Moreover, the report also emphasized the unauthorized items brought into the institution, seemingly creating the impression that those officers brought those items, although there is absolutely no evidence of that,” said the LTPF chairwoman.

As BNS wrote, the Prison Service announced at the end of July that in July two Vilnius prison officers left their jobs due to romantic relationships with inmates, and one catering company employee had their permit to enter the prison revoked.

The service promised to conduct a review of the activities of the dismissed employees to determine what actions they might have taken for the benefit of the inmates and whether they acted legally.
