Even the storm that swept through Lithuania on Saturday did not prevent love from blossoming.
On that day, Urtė Baikštytė and Edis Matusevičius said “YES” to each other at the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul the Apostles in Vilnius.
“A family of athletes!” – The Lithuanian Athletics Federation congratulated the couple on their Facebook page, whose friendship began through sports, specifically at the best athletes’ awards nine years ago.
- 30-year-old E. Matusevičius is the best Lithuanian javelin thrower and the national record holder – 89.17 m. This result was recorded in 2019.
- This year, his thrown implement flew the farthest at 83.65 m, and at the European Championship, his best attempt sent the implement 81 m 7 cm.
- 27-year-old U. Baikštytė-Matusevičė is one of the best Lithuanian high jumpers, also a former Lithuanian champion.
- She has also represented Lithuania at the highest level competitions – World and European Championships. Her career record is a bar cleared at 192 cm.
The promising high jumper U. Baikštytė was still training and studying in Šiauliai at that time, but the javelin thrower E. Matusevičius, who came to Vilnius to see her, showed persistence and gradually won her heart.
They got engaged two years ago in Thailand and married on Saturday in one of the most beautiful churches in Vilnius, in the Antakalnis district.
Although Lithuania was hit by a severe storm that day, the athletes were happy that they only felt gusts of wind.
“At least we managed to avoid the rain,” said E. Matusevičius happily.
Their celebration moved to a villa by the lake, where about fifty people congratulated the newlyweds. As E. Matusevičius said, half were close relatives and family, and half were friends.
The newlyweds still plan to wait for their good friend, hammer thrower Tomas Vasiliauskas’s upcoming wedding, where E. Matusevičius will act as a witness, and then the whole quartet of newlyweds will set off on a several-week trip to Sri Lanka.
The competition season is already over for them.
E. Matusevičius competed just a week ago at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, where despite a raised body temperature, he fought his way to the javelin throw final and finished sixth there.
“Urtė is my biggest fan. I always feel her support. Both when I succeed and when I don’t. Best wishes, Urtė,” E. Matusevičius sent greetings to Lithuania right after the competition in Birmingham.
He and U. Baikštytė, who added her husband’s surname after the wedding, emphasized that the wedding was the cherry on top of the season.
“That’s exactly how we planned it,” said E. Matusevičius. “To finish the season on a high note after the European Championship.”
