Leokadija Stefanija Olšauskaitė-Januškienė

With deep sorrow, we say goodbye to one of the most prominent Lithuanian choir conductors, pedagogue, and conductor Leokadija Stefanija Olšauskaitė-Januškienė, whose name and long-standing creative activity are inseparable from the history of the Kaunas Cultural Center.
In 1976, Leokadija Januškienė became the leader of the mixed choir „Gintaras“ at the Kaunas Cultural Center and for more than three decades nurtured the collective with her talent, professionalism, and love for choral music, united its people, and led them to the most significant concert halls and competitions in Lithuania and abroad.
Under her leadership, „Gintaras“ experienced a bright creative period, received important recognitions, and became one of the strongest amateur choirs in the country. In 1985, at the Lithuanian adult choirs competition, the choir was recognized as the best choir in Lithuania, and in 2000, the choir and its leader were awarded the „Golden Bird“ – „Gintaras“ was recognized as the brightest Lithuanian star.
Maestro Leokadija Januškienė’s contribution was not limited to one collective. She was a conductor of the Song Festivals, a promoter of choral culture, a pedagogue, and a teacher of many choir conductors. In 2007, she was awarded the II degree Santaka Honor Badge. Her initiatives, professionalism, and dedication left a deep mark on the choral life of Kaunas and all of Lithuania.
The Kaunas Cultural Center community will remain grateful for the decades spent here, for the heart given to „Gintaras“, for the music that sounded and still sounds, and for the people she gathered and inspired.
We sincerely express our condolences to the family, relatives, students, colleagues, the „Gintaras“ choir community, and all who had the fortune to know her and create together.
