Davidas Malukas finished the race in Detroit disappointed.
The racing driver, born 24 years ago in Chicago to a family of Lithuanian emigrants, considers himself a US citizen but emphasizes Lithuanian roots and traditions, had problems from the start at the “Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix” weekend.
The 24-year-old IndyCar star has Lithuanian roots – Henry and Daiva Malukai left Telšiai in 1991.
The driver’s parents, having arrived in America, founded the trucking company “HMD Trucking Company,” which eventually expanded into motorsports. They also founded the team “HMD Motorsports.”
In qualifying, D. Malukas crashed into the track barrier and damaged the car.
The “Team Penske Chevrolet” driver had to start from the back of the grid but managed to climb to fourth position when another accident happened on lap 66.
D. Malukas was pressuring Mick Schumacher. The son of seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher lost control in one of the turns. A collision occurred, and both drivers were out of the fight for prize positions.
“I did not expect that,” D. Malukas admitted after the race. “I wasn’t driving very fast, but he lost control. It was an unfortunate incident.
This weekend was one of my worst. I will need to analyze and draw conclusions. I apologize to the team and partners – this was not a good performance.”
D. Malukas took 18th place in Detroit, M. Schumacher 21st.
Having apologized to the team, D. Malukas looked at himself critically.
“I try to stay calm, but this time I let my emotions out,” said the 24-year-old driver from Chicago. “I was angry on the track, and it showed in my driving. I need to improve in this area.”
