More and more people want to start a trading business: why is it easier in this field?

E-commerce today is attractive because starting a business often requires smaller initial investments than physical retail. To start an online business, you don’t need to rent premises, immediately hire employees, or invest in a large quantity of goods. You can start on a smaller scale, test the product, assess its demand, and only then expand. Such flexibility is also important psychologically – when starting is simpler, it’s easier to say to yourself: “I’ll try.” And this is especially important in business because not every idea succeeds.

Lithuania is already one of the leaders in e-commerce in Europe. According to Eurostat data, in 2025, 43% of Lithuanian companies conducted online sales – the highest in the European Union, where the average was 24%. This shows that online trading has become not a niche but a common business model.

From idea to first sale – significantly fewer technical steps

To start a business in e-commerce, it is not necessary to build an online store from scratch. You can choose an already prepared platform, such as Shopify or Verskis.lt, or start selling on social networks, for example, Facebook. It is important to ensure convenient customer payment and product delivery, and many of these solutions can be implemented without special programming knowledge.

Previously, the main concern was how to technically create an online store, but today the most important thing is the idea and the product itself. The technical part can increasingly be entrusted to existing market solutions, which significantly lowers the barrier to entering business.

Artificial intelligence (AI) also contributes to this change. A novice entrepreneur can more quickly prepare product descriptions, advertising texts, visual ideas, or analyze information about potential customers. Later, AI can be used even more broadly – to conduct market analysis. However, artificial intelligence is not a substitute for a business idea. It allows you to complete some tasks faster and devote more time to what really matters.

Financial management has changed no less. Today, a bank account can be quickly and conveniently opened remotely, and main financial services and payments managed online. Payment information is automatically transferred to the online store or shipping systems. The entrepreneur no longer needs to check each payment manually, and the buyer’s payment can take just a few seconds.

Technology has eased the start; success depends on data usage

When an online store can be launched quickly, and marketing content and some administrative processes automated, starting a business becomes much easier. But at the same time, another important question arises – how to use these tools so that they help not only perform daily tasks but also make better business decisions? Who is the real buyer? When is he likely to buy? Where does he see the advertisement? Which products and communication channels work, and which only waste the budget?

Data helps find answers to these questions. Technological tools allow quickly testing different solutions, and the accumulated information helps understand what works and what is worth abandoning. Therefore, today it is important not only to have access to technology but also to be able to understand the information it generates and use it to make decisions. This approach allows better understanding of customers, more effective marketing planning, and more targeted investment in business growth.

Thus, technology today allows starting a business and managing its daily processes more simply, quickly, and remotely. However, technological capabilities alone are not enough – long-term value is created by the ability to use them meaningfully. When technology helps not only automate processes but also better understand customers and make data-driven decisions, more time and resources can be devoted to what matters most – a better product, customer needs, and business growth.
