When to plant winter onions in autumn 2026?
In most regions, the optimal period is October to early November. Planting should be done when the air temperature drops to +5–8 °C and remains so for several days.
In early September, it is usually too early to plant winter onions: the soil is still warm enough, so seedlings may start growing quickly. In this case, they may grow green leaves before winter, which can freeze during frosts.
Which days to choose according to the Moon calendar
According to traditional Moon sowing calendars, onions are recommended to be planted during the waning moon. In October 2026, this period is from October 1–9 and 27–31. The new moon will be on October 10, and the full moon on October 26, so these days are usually not considered the best for gardening work.

One of the most common causes of winter onion rot is stagnant water. Therefore, the bed should be chosen in a sunny place without depressions where water does not accumulate in autumn and spring.
Light, loose, and water-permeable soil is especially suitable. If the soil is heavy and clayey, its structure should be improved in advance so that after rain it does not turn into a dense and wet mass.
Also, onions should not be planted in the same place every year. Crop rotation helps reduce the risk of disease pathogens and pest accumulation.
