A. Kulbergs reproached the Minister of the Interior, stating that in the future communication with foreign countries must be coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to J. Dombrava, in the letter he indicated that the situation in Ceuta is not an isolated incident and must be assessed in a broader context. It is also necessary to find a solution at the European Union (EU) level and strengthen the security of the bloc’s external borders. The minister also expressed solidarity with Spain.
The letter expressed Latvia’s commitment to provide various technical assistance if ever needed under the joint solidarity mechanism.
“At the same time, we also drew attention (…) that these illegal immigrants should not be legalized (…). Quite a few countries have stated that this already poses a broader risk to the security of the Schengen (area),” commented J. Dombrava.

The Latvian minister did not receive a response from Spain.
“So far there is no response. Today there was a meeting of interior ministers, where, I would say, Spain’s reaction towards the Baltic countries was quite positive or neutral,” J. Dombrava said on Tuesday.
However, Latvian television learned from reliable sources that the Spaniards are not happy with the letter from the Latvian Minister of the Interior. It is reported that the tone of the letter was arrogant and that Spain indicated behind closed doors that its soldiers defend Latvia, while Latvia chooses to attack Spain at a time when the Spaniards themselves are facing immigrant attacks.
A. Kulbergs admitted that he had heard about the letter: “I highly appreciate Mr. Dombrava’s passion, initiative, and actions in addressing issues related to our border protection and the country’s overall security, but sometimes this initiative goes too far. This is a case where everything should have been coordinated.”
“I understand that Mr. Dombrava wanted to do Spain a favor by sharing our experience regarding hybrid attacks. He points out that Spain is also facing a hybrid attack from Morocco and may want to learn from how we in Latvia control this migrant flow from Belarus and Russia, but these issues are sensitive on the international stage and must be coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” explained the prime minister.
